AVL LIST GmbH is the world’s largest privately owned and independent company for the development of powertrain systems as well as simulation, instrumentation and test systems. AVL has about 3800 employees in Graz (over 700 graduated engineers) and a global network of 65 representations and affiliates resulting in more than 7500 employees worldwide. AVL´s Powertrain Engineering division activities are focused on the research, design and development of various powertrains in the view of low fuel consumption, low emission, low noise and improved drivability. The Advanced Simulation Technologies division develops and markets the simulation methods which are necessary for the powertrain development work. The Instrumentation and Test Systems division is an established manufacturer and provider of instruments and systems for powertrain and vehicle testing including combustion diagnostic sensors, optical systems as well as complete engine, powertrain and vehicle test beds. AVL supplies advanced development and testing solutions for conventional and hybrid vehicle components and systems like simulation platforms, development tools and system integration tools.


DAF Trucks N.V. is a wholly owned subsidiary of the North-American corporation PACCAR Inc. DAF Trucks‟ core activities are focused on the development, production, marketing and sale of medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. All DAF products are backed up by a full range of services. DAF Trucks also produces components for third parties, ranging from axle assemblies to complete engines for buses and coaches and special vehicles. The customer is DAF’s top priority. FPT Motorenforschung AG

FPT Motorenforschung AG (FMF) is one of the 6 internal combustion engine research and development centres of CNH Industrial Powertrain in the world. It is involved in the most important and pioneering projects of CNH Industrial’s powertrain segment with a focus on further improving already existing and developing fundamentally new technologies. CNH Industrial Powertrain employs some 8,000 people worldwide at 10 plants and 6 R&D centres. The existence of a distribution network of more than 100 dealers and 1,300 service points ensures FPT Industrial presence in around 100 countries. Through the brand “FPT Industrial”, CNH Industrial offers a wide range of propulsion and transmission systems for on- and off-road trucks and commercial vehicles, as well as engines for marine application and power generation. All in all, 6 engine families with a power from 20 to 825 HP and transmissions with a maximum power from 300 to 500 Nm are available depending on the customers’ individual requests. IVECO S.p.A. (IVECO) is one of the world leaders in road transportation. It designs, manufactures and sells a wide range of light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles for road and off-road use.

The key players in its product line-up are the Daily, a vehicle that covers the 2.8 – 7 ton vehicle weight segment, the Eurocargo from 6 – 16 tons, the Trakker (dedicated to off-road missions) and the Stralis, both over 16 tons. FEV is an independent internationally recognized company in the design and development of powertrains, power units and burners as well as a manufacturer of prototypes and instrumentation systems. FEV is certified at DIN ISO 9001 in research and development, manufacturing, sale and service - TÜV cert (Certificate registration N° 01 100 0000 10).

FEV was founded in 1978 and has now approximately 4000 employees at different facilities worldwide. A large number of them are upgrade engineers (PhD and Diploma engineers).

As a supplier FEV conducts the powertrain and power unit development projects from the initial concept phase through production release under direct implementation of the latest scientific discoveries. FEV has extensive experience in designing and developing new power systems as well as in the modification of existing designs. Our capabilities and experiences extend to power system packaging and powertrain systems integration, including the control of integrated powertrain functions, certification, calibration and homologation. FEV develops and uses mathematical models for the analysis of mechanical stress and noise and acoustic, combustion and flow processes, thermal, and medium flow management and for catalysis processes. Moreover, FEV has gained significant experience in electrification of vehicles from HEV’s over Range Extender vehicles up to full battery electric vehicles, battery management, energy management, and model based controls for all kinds of automotive systems.

Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

The Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) has got long tradition in simulations of vehicle and powertrain dynamics and experiment base for engines and powertrains, power electrical engineering, control, mechatronics and vehicle dynamics, microelectronics and ICT. JBRC (Josef Božek Research Centre of Engine and Automotive Technology) was established at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering CTU in 2000, being subsidized by the national projects. It provides R&D of vehicle electric and ICE power trains, vehicle design and engine and powertrain control. CTU is a member of networks SAE International – Czech Group, EARPA, EGVIA, ERTRAC

RWTH Aachen University

The Institute for Automotive Engineering (ika) of RWTH Aachen University is Europe’s leading institute in automotive engineering and directed by Professor Lutz Eckstein. In cooperation with car manufacturers and suppliers, ika is making an acknowledged contribution to help solve current and future global challenges.

The Institute for Combustion Engines (VKA) at RWTH Aachen University
is under direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Pischinger and the Chair of Technical Thermodynamics (LTT) form the Institute for Thermodynamics, which belongs to the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of RWTH Aachen University. The research undertaken at VKA covers all areas of modern drivetrain development: starting and emphasizing on the combustion engine topics, leading to the elements of modern hybrid drivetrains like batteries or transmissions.

The Junior Professorship for Mechatronic Systems for Combustion Engines is affiliated with the Institute for Combustion Engines and directed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jakob Andert. The research focus is on mechatronic engine components, real-time combustion control by high-speed indication analysis, as well as automotive 48V powernet system development. Hardware-in-the-loop and the realtime co-simulation methodology play a key role for the research work in all areas of expertise.

Politecnico di Milano

Politecnico di Milano (PoliMI) is the largest technical university in Italy, with approximately 1800 academics and researchers, which offers only study programmes in Engineering and Architecture. It is organized in 12 Departments of Engineering and Architecture and is currently one of the top ranked technical University in Europe. The Department of Energy counts nearly 250 people, including 110 faculty staff and 140 post-doctoral and doctoral researchers, working on advanced research activities concerning a wide range of energy sciences and technologies. In particular, three strategic sectors are investigated: energy technologies in transports; electric power generation, transmission and distribution; thermal engineering and efficient final energy use.

Politecnico di Torino

Founded in 1859, Politecnico di Torino (POLITO) is a leading institution in Italy and in Europe in the field of technical-scientific research, with a yearly budget of about €300 million and over 30000 students studying in 115 different courses (15% of them are international students). POLITO employs 900 people among professors and tenured researchers, covering all disciplines of relevance for green transport areas. Each year POLITO draw up about 800 contracts with industries, government funded institutions, local organizations. As regards the automotive area, in the last 5 years research projects at POLITO have received an amount of about €24 million from EU, national, regional and private programs.
